Paul Knight’s practice is characterised by the potentiality of intimacy. Domestic scenes are captured through a diaristic gaze that offers glimpses of a private relationship and a shared life. Through photography, Knight documents and reflects upon moments that are at once removed and strikingly candid.

Produced in support of the Monash University Museum of Art and UNSW Galleries exhibition Paul Knight: L’ombre de ton ombre, this photographic print is a limited edition of twenty-five and belongs tothe intimate, ongoing series Chamber Music, 2009–, which records the life Knight has shared with his partner Peter since they met fourteen years ago. While the bedroom depicted in Savanna is empty, the indented pillows and entwined sheets embody the traces of its recent occupants and their lives together. The title refers to biologist Edward O. Wilson’s ‘savanna hypothesis’, which proposes that the most favoured landscape of various cultures resembles the African savanna, the environment in which human and pre-human ancestors originated, and locates the image within Knight’s investigation into the potential role that intimacy plays in consciousness as an evolutionary line.

Knight was born in 1976 in New South Wales and now lives and works in Berlin. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Photography from the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, in 2001, and completed a Master of Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, in 2009. His recent solo exhibitions include: Counterfeits, Neon Parc, Melbourne, 2019; and Paul Knight, Lauwer, Rotterdam, 2018. Recent group exhibitions include: Pliable Planes: Expanded Textile & Fibre Practices, UNSW Galleries, Sydney, 2022; Queer: Stories from the NGV Collection, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2021; Direkt Auttion, Monopol, Berlin, 2021; Anywhere but here, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney, 2020; and Der Bote ist der Tote, Mauve, Vienna, 2020.
