Matters of the heart: Rehabilitation engagement and prescription in people with chronic heart failure

Monash University Department of Physiotherapy, in conjunction with ResPTlab, is pleased to announce the following upcoming seminar entitled

“Matters of the heart: Rehabilitation engagement and prescription in people with chronic heart failure”

Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) is a rising pandemic in Australia, with a significant cost to the economy, estimated around $3.1 billion and rising (Chen, 2017). In addition to high pressures imposed upon the healthcare system, a high burden is also experienced by people living with CHF due to well-documented reductions in quality of life and physical function.

Heart failure rehabilitation comprising exercise and education for self-management has been widely established as a safe and beneficial form of treatment with strong evidence of benefits across a range of patient-reported and clinically-relevant outcomes including reductions in hospital admission rates. It is a recommended component of evidence-based CHF care, however rates of rehabilitation referral, uptake and attendance for people with CHF remain low. This has led to a revised emphasis of care on patient engagement with rehabilitation rather than exercise performance alone.

This webinar aims to highlight current evidence regarding exercise prescription for rehabilitation of people with CHF, and examine the barriers to engagement and attendance from the viewpoint of different stakeholder groups. It will also explore the experiences of those living with CHF to help healthcare professionals better understand how to engage with this population across a variety of clinical settings. This session is hoped to appeal to a diverse range of healthcare professionals responsible for the management of this important patient group.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Katie Palmer is a Senior Physiotherapist in Monash Health, with extensive experience in Cardiac and Chronic Heart Failure management across the continuum of care. She is currently completing her PhD with Monash University, investigating engagement in Chronic Heart Failure and strategies to improve both referral and uptake. Her research has been presented internationally, with several studies in publication.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Health professionals working in subacute or community-based healthcare settings including fields such as cardiology, chronic disease management, rehabilitation, general medicine and gerontology. This may include physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, nurses, medical doctors or clinically-oriented researchers.

SESSION FORMAT:

Due to the changed situation in Australia regarding COVID-19, we will run this presentation as a live online webinar via Zoom, co-hosted by the presenter and Monash University. Registered participants will attend via a URL link and password (emailed after confirmation of registration) that will allow live viewing from the presenter. A pdf of slides will be made accessible to registrants. Opportunities will be provided for questions and discussion towards the end of the seminar, however these will be submitted via text chat box and proposed to the presenter via the co-host (i.e. no personal audio communication).

As we will be running this event via online webinar (Zoom), we are offering a reduced flat-rate registration cost of $15 (Monash University student rate $10).

Registration is essential in order to be granted access to the presentation and to obtain the password for the webinar meeting (two-step process).
