Methexical Countryscape Kamilaroi #8 2017 (detail)
Monash University Collection, Narrm/Melbourne
Brian Martin signals the Indigenous conception of his drawings by calling them a ‘Countryscape’ rather than a ‘landscape’ with its implication of a solitary viewer. ‘Methexis’ is a Western philosophical concept that describes the relation between the particular and the ideal. Martin uses it to convey how the real and the immaterial are concurrent in Indigenous beliefs. There is no separation between him as a Bundjalung, Kamilaroi and Muruwari artist and the Country that he draws—the two come into being through each other.
