Supervision Masterclass: Evaluating Neuropsychology Trainees

Masterclass description:

Supervisors play a key role in evaluating the knowledge, skills and attitudes of neuropsychology trainees and registrars. This can be challenging for supervisors who typically receive little or no training in the best methods for evaluating their trainees or how these evaluations can be used to develop student competencies over the course of a placement. This workshop aims to provide supervisors with knowledge and methods for the effective evaluation of their trainee’s clinical competencies, how to use this information to support trainees in their development, and how to manage instances when development is below expectation. The class will include practical tasks to increase skill and confidence as well as opportunities to discuss and learn with peers. Focus is given to evaluating neuropsychology students on placements but the knowledge and skills acquired in this masterclass can equally apply to evaluating registrars and fully registered psychologists, and to other psychology specialities that focus on assessment skills (e.g., Education and Developmental Psychologists). This masterclass is approved by the Psychology Board of Australia for maintaining board-approved supervisor status.

Presenters:
Adam McKay is an Associate Professor at Monash University and Head of Psychology at Epworth HealthCare. He is a Board approved supervisor and has been supervising trainees and employees for 20 years in neuropsychological assessment and intervention. He is passionate about supporting both supervisors and students to ensure clinical training is effective, supportive and rewarding. Linda Williamson is a Senior Lecturer and Clinical Neuropsychologist at Monash University. She is a Board- approved supervisor and leads the Adult Neuropsychology Clinic at the Turner Clinics, where postgraduate students provide neuropsychological assessments to the community. She is also the placement coordinator for the Monash neuropsychology program and supervises neuropsychologists in the application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy across diverse clinical settings. Clare Kempnich is a lecturer at Monash University and clinical neuropsychologist. She is a Board- approved supervisor and provides supervision for registrars and other clinicians working in community-based neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation setting. She has contributed to the development of a new placement evaluation tool which will be discussed in this Masterclass.

Registration and Payment:
Register early as places are limited. Preference will be given to Monash University placement supervisors who require completion of a masterclass to renew their supervisor approval with PBA.

Cost is $395 for the workshop. The fee is waived for placement supervisors of Monash University psychology students in 2026/7.
