Born in Hong Kong and raised in Melbourne, London-based artist Renee So’s evolving practice draws on artistic precedents and events from prehistoric to modern times, and is distinguished by her persistent feminist and cross-cultural worldview. Embracing craft methods and a sense of the comedic, her sculptures and two-dimensional works appear both ancient and contemporary.

Produced to coincide with the artist’s solo exhibition at MUMA, this limited release of silk scarves features Lee, 2008: a bust of an imaginary character from a non-specific time and place, historicised in perpetuity like the classic busts that fill European museums. So says, ‘It is one of my earliest heads [made] when I was new to the medium of clay and playing around ... completely improvised and without a sketch. It’s still one of my favourites.’

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Melbourne, Renee So studied painting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in the 1990s. Following a London Studio Residency with the Australia Council for the Arts, she relocated to London in 2005. So has recently been the subject of several solo exhibitions in the United Kingdom including Renee So: Effigies and Elginisms, Cample Line, Thornhill, Scotland, 2022; Ancient and Modern, De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, Sussex, 2019; and Bellarmines and Bootlegs, Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, 2019. Renee So: Provenance is the artist’s first major museum exhibition. It will travel to UNSW Galleries, Sydney, in 2023. In 2024, So will have a solo exhibition at Compton Verney, Warwickshire.
