This Edition accompanies Nusra Latif Qureshi’s major solo exhibition The House of Irredeemable Objects at Monash University Museum of Art, 26 July – 20 September 2025.

Qureshi’s vivid watercolours resemble gemstones with their saturated colours and organic forms. Inspired by 17th-century French explorer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier’s book Travels in India (1684), which documented gems and their histories—from extraction through slavery to prestige ownership—Qureshi explores the speculative journeys of precious stones. She is drawn to the layered symbolism, social value and storytelling that surround material culture. Her work reflects a fascination with how these objects become entangled in histories of commerce, class and myth. Blending this with her love of poetry and human connection, Qureshi here composes images that are rich in symbolism yet retain their sense of mystery.
