Fern New Growth Emu Feather Raffia Hoop Earrings
Wiradjuri artist Ange Jeffery incorporates natural materials found on Country in her jewellery, including emu feathers and raffia.
This series of individually handmade earrings are made from 100% reclaimed/recycled sterling silver ear hooks, with emu feathers woven into the outer rim of the hoop. No two are identical, due to the colour variations in the feathers, the thickness of the raffia and the dye. For the artist, they are her ‘Dinawan dindilay mawang’ (emu walking together).
Ange is a northern Wiradjuri artist who grew up on Country in central west NSW, where the Wambuul (Macquarie River) had a lasting influence and is an inspiration for her art practice. She has an environmental science background and balances her technical ability with creative pursuits. Working in mixed media with a particular interest in jewellery and body adornment, she was invited in 2023 by Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA to work with students from the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS) to create their own wearable art.
