Introducing the Monash University Impedance Analysis Tool for Blackbox PSCAD Models

Unlocking Stability in Inverter-Dominated Grids: Introducing a Breakthrough Tool for Black-Box PSCAD IBR Models Using Impedance-Based Frequency Domain Analysis.

Join us for an exciting hybrid event where we introduce a game-changing tool designed to tackle one of the most pressing challenges in the renewable energy transition: ensuring stability in power systems dominated by inverter-based resources (IBRs). Funded by ARENA, supported by leading industry partners (AEMO and Powerlink), and developed by experts at Monash University’s Power Engineering Advanced Research Laboratory (PEARL), this tool provides a breakthrough approach for diagnosing complex stability issues and control interactions in IBR-dominated grids, even when working with encrypted, black-box IBR models.

The tool features an integrated approach to impedance scanning, stability analysis and data management and provides an easy-to-use and elegant graphical user interface for user interaction. Using impedance-based stability analysis in the frequency domain, the tool can evaluate control interation phenomena in complex networks that intergrate multiple proprietary IBR models, without needing access to their internal workings. This approach allows grid operators and engineers to identify potential stability issues early and ensure smooth integration of renewable energy sources like wind and solar into renewable-rich networks such as Renewable Energy Zones. The tool reduces reliance on time-consuming simulations and offers clearer insights into grid behaviour, making it an indispensable resource for managing modern power systems.

What to Expect:
Presentation (90 minutes): A detailed look at how the tool works with black-box IBR models, demonstrating its capabilities in solving real-world stability issues. The presentation will cover theory and practical examples for impedance scanning, IBR control tuning and wide area model interaction analysis.
Q&A Session (30 minutes): Ask questions directly to the tool’s developers and gain insights into how it can benefit your organisation.
Networking Opportunity: Connect with industry professionals, grid operators, and engineers (in-person attendees only).

Event Details:
Date & Time: October 18, 2024, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM (AEST)
Format: Hybrid (Attend in person at Monash Conference Centre (30 Collins St, Melbourne 3000) in Melbourne CBD or via Zoom
Who Should Attend: Power system engineers, grid operators, renewable energy consultants, and anyone involved in the energy transition.
