Genomics and the Future of Medicine

This one-day course will explore how best to manage patient expectations on how genomic information may or may not improve the quality of care.

The facilitator will present information on the current use of genomics in medicine and how this information can be used in general practice. You will have the opportunity to engage and discuss challenges experienced in guiding patients through the complexity of genomics in general practice.

The course will include the following topics:

  • Consumer genomics

- Wellness e.g. nutrition/exercise/lifestyle

  • Microbiome (gut health)
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Reproductive health (routine in IVF)
  • Non-invasive pre-natal testing (NIPT)
  • Disease risk screening
  • Precision oncology
  • Rare undiagnosed genetic disease
