Documenting Environments: Technologies, Practices and Imaginaries

Digital media technologies are increasingly finding new ways to document, interrogate and express the reality of environmental pasts, presents and futures. These include interactive documentary (i-Docs) and other “interactives,” but also webcams, data visualization, VR, and 3D visualisations. While not immediately considered as “documentary,” many of these technologies draw on traditions of fact-based storytelling, the veracity of visible evidence or the truth-telling potential of mediated information in ways that align them with the “documentary impulse” of traditional film and television. This colloquium brings together scholars and practitioners to ask how renewed attention to the question of the documentary endeavour might offer greater understanding of the relationship between media and environment in a time of ecological crisis, particularly the ways we imagine environmental futures. It will contribute to a dialogue across disciplines, specifically across Media, Film and Journalism and Monash Art, Design and Architecture.
