Dignity of Risk Workshop

Workshop run by Professor Joseph Ibrahim on January 31st at Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, includes screening of Professor Ibrahim's award winning film Dignity of Risk.

Prof Joe, a geriatrician, is faced with a difficult decision when he finds that his elderly patient, Mr Jones, can no longer live safely at home. He decides to put Mr Jones in a care-home to protect him from all the risks around him, but soon finds himself uneasy about his decision.

Dignity of Risk is a 15min short film/documentary featuring an encounter between Prof Joe and a patient, Mr Jones, who has recently been diagnosed with dementia. The film raises the question relating to either protecting Mr Jones from harm or intruding on his choices to enjoy his life.

The film won “Best Narrative Film Category” at the 2017 Global Impact Film Festival (GIDC) a dynamic independent film festival in Washington, DC. USA. The festival’s mission is to empower lives by celebrating the power of media for social justice by showcasing films that provoke and inspire social change. The film also won laurels at six other international festivals including the United Nations Association Festival.
