  • An approach to choosing the correct therapeutic strategy for individual patient

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Appropriately assess patients presenting with irritable bowel syndrome and confidently make a positive diagnosis of the condition by utilizing the ROME IV criteria to minimize inappropriate and unnecessary investigations
  • Effective & appropriately communicate the diagnosis to the patient and other clinicians involved in the patients care
  • Understand that patients with irritable bowel syndrome often have a history of adverse life events and or psychological stress/distress which needs to be managed sensitively and holistically.
  • Have improved awareness of evidence based treatments (both medical and non-medical) available to General practitioners when treating patients with irritable bowel syndrome and confidence in implementing them effectively
  • Will be able to compare the efficiency of medical and non-medical therapies for IBS to design a patient centered management program
  • Identify appropriate referral pathways for patients presenting with irritable bowel syndrome to improve patients access to timely effective therapeutic interventions.
