About the course:

This course will provide participants a foundation of crucial critical thinking skills, essential tools to navigate our busy lives and the ability to make sound choices from amongst the ever increasing range of options and choices on offer in our global community and in particular, the workplace. Critical thinking improves our chance for success in life. By learning, practicing, and applying critical thinking skills, we are less likely to make poor decisions, increasing our chance for success in what we do. Critical thinking is essential.  It allows us to make good decisions that benefit us as a society. This occurs when we use our critical thinking skills when working; if we are involved in making, evaluating, or enforcing laws; in governing; responding to crises; and in making key decisions in our lives. The course will provide you with a tool kit to enhance your critical thinking skills.

Structure:

This course comprises of 5 modules of learning, followed by the completion of a Personal Development Plan and Final Assessment to qualify for your micro-credential. Please see below a unit-by-unit breakdown of what you will learn in this course. 


Unit 1: Introduction to the concepts of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. 

Unit 2: The process of developing Critical Thinking Skills. 

Unit 3: Steps to applying Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills in the workplace set against the context of decision-making frameworks. 

Unit 4: This unit will support you to explore different tools and techniques in the development and application of critical thinking and problem solving. 

Unit 5: You will revisit key signposts in the course thus far and move into using strategies learnt thus far to become an effective critical thinker, challenging yourself and others to evaluate, solve problems and make strong evidence-based, logical decisions to take your organisation forward.  You will also undertake a final summative assessment to gauge knowledge gained as a result of undertaking this course. Successful completion of this summative assessment will support you towards gaining the Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Micro-credential.

Assessments:

  1. Formative Assessments throughout the course, functioning as knowledge checks.
  2. Personal Development Plan completion
  3. Summative Assessment at the end of course.

  1. Comprehend the notion of critical thinking and problem solving.
  2. Identify and analyse a range of personal and workplace problems.
  3. Develop critical questions on problems.
  4. Identify and consult others who can assist with problems.
  5. Use a range of creative thinking techniques.
  6. Use critical thinking processes to develop critical questions and criteria for identified problems.
  7. Practice a range of critical thinking tasks to apply to problems.
