Candice Lin: Booklet-poster
Los Angeles-based artist Candice Lin’s first solo exhibition in Australia, The Sex Life of Stone, explores speculative and historical entanglements between manganese pigment, industrial mining, historical trade between Asia and Australia, and the sexual properties of sea slugs. Known for her exploratory use of materials, Lin weaves together fiction and dark humour to engage histories of colonisation and extraction in unexpected ways.
This fold-out booklet includes a newly commissioned short story by American-born, Canadian novelist Larissa Lai. The text expresses Lin and Lai’s shared engagement with speculative fiction, queer time and decolonial (re)visions of the future. Designed by Žiga Testen and Stuart Geddes, the booklet can be unfolded into a poster and transformed into a kite, in the manner of previous kite works by Candice, inviting play and interaction.
