ATS2331/ATS3331 Music in Culture Study Tour

This unit study tour introduces students to the study of music in different cultural contexts. Culturally-specific approaches to performance, composition, music technology and ethnomusicology/musicology will be investigated in their environments. The focus of the unit will be a reflective approach to the integration of diverse traditions of music into individual creative and research activity.

The unit focuses on understanding music from an Indigenous perspective, including First Nations cultural practices and protocols, the history and experience of colonisation and its impact on a range of factors including matters of intellectual property and copyright. Across an intensive and immersive two-week, face-to-face experience, students will undertake fieldwork rediscovering familiar territory (Melbourne CBD and surrounds) from a First Nations' perspective, a two-day on country tour to Ballarat, and an intensive opportunity for creative work applying coursework insights, culminating in a high quality recording as the final unit outcome.
