Biology Genetics Techniques Workshop

This half day course covers the core principles of genetics and helps students develop skills in applying advanced genetic tools and techniques required for analysing and interpreting data.  These are core concepts in VCE Bio Unit 4 (study area 1 and 2) and may put some of the theory taught in the classroom into context with real life experience.  Attendees will undertake gel electrophoresis and explore DNA sequencing and profiling to identify species and practise the investigative protocols used by professional conservation geneticists.  Students will consider how captive breeding and translocation programs influence evolutionary processes such as gene flow, in the context of wildlife conservation and evaluate evidence from phylogenies to explore and interpret evolutionary relationships that lead to biological change.  All resources supplied.
